C.D. Leganés resume their search for their first win of the season this Friday at 21:00 CEST as they travel to El Molinón to play Real Sporting. The pepineros have clashed with the Asturians nine times across both the Primera and Segunda Divisiónes, but with a record of six draws and three defeats, their first league win would also be their first three points won at Gijón.
The blanquiazules made their first journey to Gijón in December 1998 only to end the game at a goalless draw. The following year Real Sporting won with a resounding 3-0 score, but were brought back on level terms with Leganés in 2000/01 after a 2-2 draw and goals from Macanás and Fede Marín. The three subsequent fixtures also saw the sides splitting the points, with Gámiz, Villa and Calandria scoring for the pepineros.
Deadlocked draws set the precedent for Friday
Returning to Segunda, Garitano's men were unable to come away with any points when the teams met in 2014/5 at El Molinón despite going ahead thanks to Diego Aguirre's finish. The only encounter between the two sides to take place in Primera, in 2016, also ended in a 2-1 defeat for Leganés, with Diego Rico's goal not proving enough to defend pepinero ambitions.
The last time Leganés travelled to play Real Sporting turned out to be the final match in 2020, but brought some optimism to Madrid after finishing all square at 1-1. Djurdjevic sent the home team in front when he capitalised on a loose ball after Riesgo's penalty save, but Borja Bastón, after winning a penalty in added time, equalised to divide the points at least for another year.
