C.D. Leganés achieved its fifth consecutive victory this Sunday against C.D. Tenerife, a streak that it had never before achieved in its history in LaLiga SmartBank. Until now, the pepineros had managed to string together four wins on several occasions, but this is the first time they have won five games in the silver category.
The unblemished streak began on February 1 against C.D. Lugo, in Asier Garitano's reinstatement as coach, when C.D. Leganés won 3-2 thanks to Sabin Merino's brace and Rubén Pardo's goal. The following weekend they beat Girona F.C. away (0-2) with another brace, this time from Kevin Bua. And last week, they had three more home wins: 3-1 against Albacete Balompié, 2-1 against U.D. Almería and 1-0 against C.D. Tenerife.
In the second division, the previous best streak was four wins.
The previous best record in Segunda was set at four consecutive victories, something that C.D. Leganés had achieved on four occasions. The first of them, in the 1999/00 season under Enrique Martín, beating Logroñés, Lleida, Salamanca and Albacete.
Under Asier Garitano, in the 2014/15 campaign, the pepineros beat Llagostera, Mallorca, Lugo and Racing between the 23rd and 26th matchdays, and in the following season, the year of promotion, they achieved two four-game winning streaks: the first, against Llagostera, Mirandés, Almería and Córdoba, and the second against Osasuna, Lugo, Alavés and Albacete.
The club's all-time record, eight consecutive wins in 1974/75
The record of consecutive victories in the club's documented history dates back to the 1974/75 season, when Leganés played in the Primera Regional. At that time, the Pepineros won eight consecutive matches between matchdays 5 and 12: Aranjuez (3-1), At. Pinto (0-1), San Cristóbal (3-0), Sonseca (1-4), Quintanar (8-2), Cañaveral (0-3), Alcobendas (2-1) and Ciempozuelos (0-1). At the end of that season, the Blue and Whites were promoted to Regional Preferente.
